About Helen
One of the many joys for photographers is the sense of discovery as we follow the light, a gift we receive each morning—light on the landscape as it moves across the sky, on people’s faces at all hours; light as it shows us the marvels of animals and the magic of water in various shapes and seasons. And at special moments, that light shines within an object or living being giving it extra vibrancy and emotion, revealing something hidden right before our eyes.
Turning my attention to a particular subject on the other side of the camera’s lens continually reminds me that photographers do not take pictures with a camera alone: our hearts and minds are in the process; and when successful, a photograph is filled with surprises and connections that have a tone and voice of their own. A camera’s ability to capture a fleeting moment in all its complexity and detail is one of photography’s triumphant achievements; and it is my hope, as a photographer, that others will share with me the excitement of seeing with fresh eyes the visual poetry in this complex, strange, unfathomable, and wonder-filled world around us.
